NEWS - From the February

Charlotte
Stupka, who was fortunate enough to meet the former
Secretary of State, Madeline Albright in 2002
at the Masaryk Statue dedication, in Washington DC,
was thrilled to meet her again on January 18th at
Barnes and Noble, in Plantation, where Ms. Albright
was signing her new book, Memo to the President Elect.

Santa
came to town at ACSCC two days early in 2007. On Sunday,
December 23rd Santa (Lubo Gurtler) and his
elves (Alexandra and Kristina Berková) made an appearance
at the club and personally handed out all of the presents
under our Christmas tree.. Many thanks to Martina
Kmoch for putting this very nice event together.

Bob
Petřík and Cecilia Rokusek presented a
program on Sunday, January 20th, called "Adventures
in Saudi Arabia," which highlighted experiences
during their recent trip there. Bob and Cecilia were
dressed in the traditional clothing of the Saudi people.
For their slide presentation they passed a Koran among
the attendees and showed mementoes bought in markets
(souks).
On
January 13, 2008 the following officers were installed:
President, Karl Kmoch; 1st Vice President,
Marie Svoboda; 2nd Vice President, Drew
Bowyer; Secretary, Renata Ordonez; and
Treasurer, Cecilia Rokusek. For a list of the
Long-time
past member Helen Kopecky Layman, of College Station,
Texas, recently had a stroke. She is now in rehab
and we wish her a speedy recovery.
Lydia
Darvas has her Portraiture of American Leading
Figures, an artist's portrayal of leading American
icons, available to the public for viewing at the
Research Center of the Smithsonian National Portrait
Gallery in Washington, DC.
The
club bar has added two bottled beers to its inventory.
They are Czechvar and Staropramen.

Upcoming
Events
Dr. M. Mark Stolárik will speak on The History of Slovaks
in America at the Club on Sunday, February 17th beginning
at 3:00 PM. Dr. Stolárik is Professor of History and is
the Chair in Slovak History and Culture at the University
of Ottawa in Canada. He is one of the foremost authorities
on the subject of Slovak immigration to North America. He
has published eight books and over 60 articles on the history
of immigration and ethnic groups in North America.
On Sunday,
March 9th, club member Dr. Eric Dluhosch will speak on Prague
Coffee House Culture. He will present sections of a paper
that he has submitted for publication. He will focus primarily
on the 20th century until the beginning of World War II
when the coffee houses in Prague were the centers of debate
among Czech writers, philosophers and other notable personage
of the avant garde.
